CREATIVE CHALLENGE: BROKEN

 

BROKEN WINKLE  

  Winkles or horns are ceramic pots all different in size that, a long time ago, were parts of the typical Portuguese windmills that still dot the country's landscape, yet they are not operating any more. However, in the past, these winkles that were attached to the ropes and the wooden structure, which jib sails were tightened to, played an important role in the peasant's daily life. As the wind blew on the winkles, it made them emit a very peculiar sound that could be heard over long distances. Hearing it, peasants knew that it was the right timing to take their sacks of wheat or the corn grain to be milled. The miller would surely be at the windmill, ready to work.

Normally, people, rode a donkey that also carried the sacks of grain and then brought the flour back home. When the winkles sounded, people used to say 'the windmill is singing".

 

 

 

 

Nowadays, windmills do not sing any more, maybe they are crying in silence.... like people who do it, sometimes.... ©Belita

I sat on the beach and a beautiful wave

Came tumbling right up to me.

It threw a jellyfish on the sand at my feet,

I wondered it wished a little company.

Not using its twist tentacles for hunting,

It soaked up the sun and showed its charm.

As it played on the sand with its arms,

 I started fearing they would hug me,

Not sure was I that they might know

 I would never be a delicacy!

Let the salt crunch

Like sugar glass

Beneath your feet,

If your lips taste every single grain,

An endless source for architects of mirages,

  Urban centres, stadiums, skyscrapers,

  Sometimes, I feel thirsty on the surface,

  Others, I get over drunk and end up hazardous.

Populated by colorful flowers

  I become beautiful at people’s eyes.

   Reptiles slide along me,  

Insects kiss me softly,

  Canines sniff me as if looking for something,

  Felines tread me with their paws.

 Often I am crushed by huge animals

 While others walk on me... gently!

  I’m foot printed by every kind of people,

  Aged, teens and kids,

Wealthy, unfavoured, celebrities,

 All of them need me,

Yet, very often I’m maltreated.

I’m the ground... cogitating!

The food becomes so greasy

That if it passed on my lips

Forever it’ld be on my hips,

Trillions of people love it

They say it’s really good,

I don’t share their taste

I dislike junk food

I prefer healthy meals

When I was a kid, I loved walking to Oporto downtown and watch the four figures – Saint John (the patron of Oporto), Henry the Navigator and two local writers – coming out whenever this clock stroke 3:00 pm. Many years have passed since I moved to Lisbon. However, there has not been a single visit to my birthplace without my heart bursting with joy as I gather the crowd for the show.©Belita

CREATIVE CHALLENGE: BOTTOM OF ...

   

I sought myself in the wind

  And

  Found myself in the sea,

  I travelled down down,

  From the surface to the bottom,

  Through valleys, plains and ridges

  And

  I saw jellyfish flashing like neon signs,

  Seahorses playing with stars,

  Plants that looked like animals

  And

  Animals that resembled flowers,

All living together in perfect harmony.

How different their world was from our reality!

As I returned back to the surface,

I sought myself in the sunshine

And

Without asking for a rescue,

  I found myself in YOU!
