WHITE PEAHEN
This Garden is the oldest in Portugal and it's a part of the Agronomical Teaching Institute, as a research and study amenity. The garden has origins in the 18th century, founded in 1768 and designed by the renowned Italian botanic Domingos Vandelli who used the same style as that of his town of birth, Pádua.
After the damage of the big earthquake of 1755 that destroyed much of Lisbon, the then Royal Family decided to move to one of the Lisbon’s areas that was less affected by the earthquake: the Ajuda quarter, at that time far from the centre. The Garden was then built for the Royal family leisure, and education of the Princes, as an important part of the Ajuda National Palace.
Occupying an area of about 3.5 hectares, the Garden style follows the Renaissance style with sculpted stones, fountains and lakes. The decoration is markedly Barroque.
